Beneath the postcard of golden beaches and packed resorts, the Algarve hides one of the most revealing urbex scenes in Portugal: luxury hotels that never opened, burnt-out palaces and concrete high-rises clinging to the cliff. These are the scars of the real-estate euphoria and the 2008 crisis, left to rot in full view of the sea. We have gathered 3 abandoned places that are genuinely still standing in 2026 in the district of Faro — from Albufeira to Lagos by way of Loulé — each with its own story, its video and its free GPS coordinate.
Our map gathers more than 229,000 geolocated abandoned places in over 200 countries, and it was from that collection that we filtered to keep only ruins that are real and still standing in 2026, never turned into a paid attraction. For each one: its story, its video and an "Add to my map" button — the exact GPS coordinate is free, with no credit card. This is the guide to urbex in the Algarve; it is part of our master guide to abandoned places in Portugal.
Abandoned places in the Algarve: why Urbex Maps changes everything
Many "free" sites end up charging you 50 euros on a forum for the real address. We do the opposite: an "Add to my map" button unlocks the exact coordinate in your personal space, with no credit card. A community of more than 40,000 explorers since 2021 checks every coordinate at least twice before publishing it. The 3 places below are ordered by visual impact and historical importance; for each one, a link to its listing and to the urbex map of Portugal. Everything opens from the free urbex map or from your My map space.

1. Ocean Ville Hotel, Albufeira: the country's biggest ghost luxury hotel

On the outskirts of Albufeira rises the Ocean Ville, a colossal luxury aparthotel finished around 2008 but that never really opened. Caught head-on by the financial crisis, it stood empty: hundreds of apartments, dry pools, endless corridors and a giant facade turned toward the Atlantic. It is the largest abandoned luxury hotel in Portugal and has become an icon of the 2008 crisis, an involuntary monument to the Algarve's real-estate bubble. Looted and covered in graffiti, it still draws explorers from all over Europe. More ruins on the urbex map of Portugal.
2. Fonte da Pipa Palace, Loulé: the romantic palace devoured by flames

Right in the heart of Loulé, the Fonte da Pipa Palace is a romantic little mansion from the late 19th century, with turrets and a fairy-tale air. In January 2017, a violent fire destroyed its roof, its towers and the entire interior, leaving only the walls open to the sky. It has been sinking into abandonment ever since, with vegetation taking over the rubble while its future drags on between plans and uncertainty. It is an urban urbex with a heavy historical and emotional charge, right in the city centre. Discover more on the map of Portugal.
3. Former Golfinho Hotel, Lagos: the concrete skeleton of Praia Dona Ana

On the cliff above the famous Praia Dona Ana, in Lagos, the former Golfinho Hotel was once a landmark of Algarve tourism. This seven-storey giant, with around 300 rooms, closed in 2003 and has since been wasting away as a concrete skeleton deteriorating in front of the Atlantic. Empty windows, crumbling balconies and graffiti-covered walls make up a silhouette impossible to ignore from the beach. It is one of the most iconic urbex sites of the western Algarve, a testament to an era of tourism frozen in time. See also the abandoned places in Portugal.
Abandoned places in the Algarve: frequently asked questions
Is it legal to explore abandoned places in the Algarve?
Exploring is not a crime, but all of these sites have an owner (private, municipal or state): entering without permission can amount to trespassing. The Ocean Ville Hotel, the Fonte da Pipa Palace and the former Golfinho Hotel are fenced-off properties, explored clandestinely. Never force your way in, don't damage anything and leave if you are asked to.
What is the most famous abandoned hotel in the Algarve?
The most emblematic is the Ocean Ville Hotel, in Albufeira — the largest abandoned luxury hotel in Portugal and a symbol of the 2008 crisis. In Lagos, the former Golfinho Hotel, on the cliff of Praia Dona Ana, contends for the title thanks to its scale and spectacular location above the sea.
How do I get the GPS coordinates of these places?
Each place above has a card with the "Add to my map" button: when you click it, the exact GPS coordinate is saved in your personal My map space, for free and with no credit card. You can then open everything on the free urbex map and browse the Algarve.
Is urbex dangerous in the Algarve?
Yes, there are real risks: floors and stairs can give way, there is asbestos, exposed glass and metal, and some buildings, such as the Golfinho Hotel, sit right on the edge of the cliff. Never go alone, take a flashlight and sturdy shoes, tell someone your route and respect the barriers. A crumbling concrete skeleton perched over the sea is no place to fool around.
