1. Tomogashima Third Battery (Wakayama): The Fortress Island Called Laputa

Floating in the Kitan Strait, Tomogashima is a fortress island built during the Meiji era to defend Osaka Bay. Its Third Battery (第三砲台跡) in particular is a maze of ivy-swallowed brick arches, ammunition magazines and underground passages — as if you had stumbled into the world of the film Castle in the Sky (Laputa). Nicknamed "Laputa Island," it has become one of the signature abandoned sites of Kansai. Though uninhabited, the island is reached by a regular ferry from Kada Port, and exploring it is legal and free. Bring a light and slip into the underground magazines, where the cool Meiji-era brickwork awaits you. It is a must-visit if you start in Kansai. 2. Atago Cable Car Station Ruins (Kyoto): The Mountaintop Station Stopped by War

In 1929 (Showa 4), the Atagoyama Cable Car (愛宕山ケーブル) carried passengers from Arashiyama up to the summit of Mount Atago. Its terminus, the Atago Station ruins (愛宕駅跡), is what remains of a cable line once boasted to be "the longest in the Orient." In the middle of the Pacific War, it was suspended in 1944 as a non-essential line and never ran again. After a steep climb, a huge windowless concrete station building stands there, sinking into the mountain's greenery. Nearby you will also find the ruins of the Atagoyama Hotel and an amusement park, making it a rare site where you can take in an abandoned railway, station and hotel in one go. Note, however, that there is almost no mobile signal, and reaching it requires a proper hike from Kiyotaki. Come prepared with the right gear and stamina.
3. Hototogisu Ryokan (Osaka, Hannan): The Abandoned Hot-Spring Inn of Yamanaka-dani

In the city of Hannan, Osaka Prefecture, in the valley of Yamanaka-dani (山中渓) — famous for its cherry blossoms — the Hototogisu Ryokan (ほととぎす旅館) is quietly falling to ruin. Opened around 1931 (Showa 6) as an inn of Yamanaka Onsen, its wooden building was left behind, jutting out over the mountain stream after it closed. Tilting corridors, moss-covered baths, furniture still in place — it is one of Kansai's finest wooden ruins, steeped in the atmosphere of a Showa-era hot-spring resort. However, a fire in 2025 has left the building in an ever more fragile state year by year. It is private property and off-limits, so it is wise to limit yourself to documenting the exterior. Never force your way inside. To find more ruins around Osaka, head to the map of abandoned places in Japan.
Abandoned Places in Osaka & Kansai: Frequently Asked Questions
Is it legal to explore abandoned places in Kansai?
Exploring in itself is not a crime, but almost every ruin has an owner (private landowner, municipality or the state), and entering without permission may constitute criminal trespass. Some places, like the Tomogashima batteries, are outdoors and open for free; others, like the Hototogisu Ryokan, are off-limits and explored unofficially. Always follow three rules: never pry open a fence or door, never break anything, and leave if you are asked to.
What is the most famous abandoned place in Osaka and Kansai?
The best known is surely the Third Battery of Tomogashima (友ヶ島 第三砲台跡) in Wakayama. Loved under the nickname "Laputa Island," it is one of the few large-scale ruins you can legally reach by regular ferry. For historical weight there is the Atago Station of the Atagoyama cable car (愛宕山ケーブル 愛宕駅跡) in Kyoto, and for the charm of a wooden ruin the Hototogisu Ryokan (ほととぎす旅館) in Hannan, Osaka — each an icon of Kansai in its own way.
How do I get the GPS coordinates for these places?
Each of the spots above has a card with an "Add to My Map" button. Click it and the exact GPS coordinates are saved to your own personal "My Map." It is free and requires no credit card. Once saved, you can open everything on the free abandoned-places map and explore area by area.
Is exploring abandoned places dangerous?
Yes, there are real dangers. Floors and roofs can give way, there is glass and falling debris, asbestos, and in the mountains there may be no mobile signal at all. Avoid going alone, bring a flashlight and sturdy shoes, tell someone where you are going, and respect fences and warnings. Be especially careful at sites that involve a hike, like Mount Atago, and at the fire-damaged Hototogisu Ryokan. Exploration only counts when it is safe.
