1. Büvetta Tarasp: the last pump room of the Engadine

The Büvetta Tarasp is an abandoned pump room from the heyday of Swiss spa culture, in Tarasp near Scuol in the Lower Engadine. Between 1874 and 1876, the architect Bernhard Simon built an octagonal rotunda that sheltered three mineral springs. With the end of spa operations in the late 1970s the Büvetta closed, and since 2006 it has been sealed off because of the risk of falling rocks. It is the last preserved pump room of its kind in Switzerland and is protected as a category A cultural monument; the population of Scuol has approved a credit of 3.7 million francs for restoration.

The Waldhaus Tenigerbad is an abandoned spa hotel in Val Sumvitg, in the municipality of Sumvitg in the Surselva. The healing spring was first mentioned in 1580; the large hotel building, more than 80 metres long with mineral baths on every floor, opened in 1908. After a brief final period of operation, the building has stood empty since the spring of 1977, with a rusted terrace and rotten floors, and is regarded as one of the best-known ghost hotels in Switzerland. In 2023 it was bought by an investor; nothing has been done so far, and the building remains a ruin.

3. Sogn Parcazi: castle and church in ruins since 1470

Sogn Parcazi is a castle and church ruin above Trin, at the entrance to the Surselva. The site is very old, with a church that may date back to the 8th century. On 2 July 1470, a fire destroyed the complex, killing several people; it was never rebuilt and has remained a ruin ever since. Today the walls of the church and castle stand freely in the landscape as a protected cultural asset of national importance.

4. Falein: the abandoned Heidi mountain hamlet
Falein is a largely abandoned summer-pasture hamlet (Maiensäss) above Filisur, in the municipality of Bergün Filisur in the Val d'Albula. The scattered huts, among them the "Alpöhi hut", served as a filming location for the Heidi films in 1952 and 1954. In the autumn of 2014, construction work uncovered two partial skulls roughly 1,200 years old, bearing signs of a violent death, an archaeological mystery still unsolved to this day. The hamlet has not been turned into a museum and can only be reached on foot, as a hiking destination.
